Postgraduate study

What is it?

Postgraduate study allows you specialise in a particular area of interest. Students who go on to postgraduate studies usually demonstrate a high level of academic achievement and display a mature attitude to independent study. In most cases there is an element of research involved, either through the end dissertation/thesis or through various coursework which will require the student to critically analyse, review and comment on articles, journals, papers, etc.

  • There are many opportunities for work experience and study abroad programmes.
  • Length of study in the UK is shorter than the United States which makes it comparatively cheaper.
  • The style of learning is progressive and forward-thinking, to ensure students are able equally to learn and to create knowledge.
  • Apart from the MBA, there is greater emphasis on independent study and research, including a dissertation or thesis from 10,000-100,000 words.

  • Often takes length and position of work experience into account as a requirement of entry. (Generally at least 3 years at a management level is expected.)
  • Can offer a variety of specialisations such as marketing, management, e-business, HR and international business
  • Assessment can include individual and team projects, coursework, presentations, exams and a dissertation
  • Research master's

  • Entire year is devoted to research of chosen topic
  • Main assessment is final dissertation of 10,000 words
  • Useful for working professionals who have identified current issues in their field
  • Can help prepare for higher research study such as a PhD
  • Doctorate

  • Otherwise known as a PhD
  • 3-4 years are devoted to one single research project on your thesis topic
  • Assessment is of a final thesis of approximately 100,000 words

  • Science courses: £7,500-£20,000 per year
