What is business and management?

These degrees focus on how organisations operate – what they do, their styles of management, and their business strategies. You will also study the various issues that have developed in an increasingly globalised industry, such as corporate social responsibility or the environment.

Although many UK business/management degrees allow for either a specialisation or combined degree in other areas such as international business, marketing and computing, there are usually common threads of marketing, quantitative methods, and human resource and operations management. Therefore a good foundation in maths is beneficial and strong communication skills are essential.

Why study business and management?

In the UK in 2008, six months after graduation, nearly 62% of business studies graduates were in full-time paid employment.

Many Business courses in the UK will have a vocational component that might include work placements or practical coursework and overseas study programmes which help build important future networking and job opportunities.

Students usually develop strong analytical and critical thinking skills, effective and persuasive communication skills, and a confidence in managing projects independently or in a team.
